Day 5 - Travel Day

Travelled from Lecco to Munich today. Left 8am, arrived 10:16pm.

In the severe heat, I had what can only be described as an 'Italian Trains Day'.

An Italian Trains Day is where you spent hours standing on scorching hot platforms guarding your bags waiting to find out the right platform, where you get the ticketing system slightly wrong and have to buy a another ticket for your bike, where the information you get is incomplete... and where the trains are ovens.

Only one of these from 9 til about 5...
Had planned to catch the fast intercity train from Verona to Munich but the fine people at Milano Centrale could not book a spot for my bike on the fast train, and when I got to Verona I discovered there was no room for my 'bici'. With a new itinerary generated by an efficient German trains (Deutche Bahn) employee, I scurried straight on to the first of my next 5 connections via the regional train network. There was no way i was going to miss my rendezvous in Munich with Gregor, Lena and Hil who were coming to pick me up.

Amusingly passed through Bolzano 22 days earlier than planned - back in a couple of weeks.

Only got scolded once by an old italian man for not shutting my window on the train from Bolzano to Brenner. Ultimately amusing and probably good for me to be on the wrong end of the language barrier and talked to as if I were an idiot or the rudest person in Italy - how was I to know there were kilometres of tunnels ahead?

Brenner - Austria is that way.
Brenner - and Italy is back that way.

Dinner - and WATER - in Brenner.

Everyone likes a visual pun.
Made good progress through Pratchett/Baxter's third in the 'Long Earth' series, The Long Mars. Highly enjoyable.
